The Fall Garden

The fall garden in its early stage.

In August we started some seedlings for a fall garden, and in September we readied a new plot of ground for our plant babies. The transplants included Swiss Chard, collard greens, kohlrabi, Pok Choy, green onions, and carrots. I know that transplanting carrots is not usually recommended, so we'll see how they do! Right now the carrot tops look beautiful, as do the green onions. The greens have suffered quite a bit of bug damage, but they seem to be overcoming it. I hope they keep growing and doing well.

We also direct-seeded several varieties: radish, turnips, spinach, beet leaves, two types of lettuce, baby kale, Mizuna, Hong Vit greens, Cress, Claytonia, and arugula. Some of it had a rough start because of the excessive rains, but I think most of it will succeed. We had a bit of a scare with the chance of frost recently, but we covered as much as we could, and then we ended up not getting a frost after all. Once the weather turns colder, we have row covers to protect the plants at night. We'll see how it goes, but it sure would be nice to have some cold-hardy greens to eat in the fall and early winter. Soon we'll be starting our indoor sprouts, so keep an eye out for those as well. Thanks so much to all our customers for your support!
